Why is Handmade Better?
Why Handmade Is Better Than Mass-Produced
Before becoming an artist and entrepreneur, I never gave much thought to the difference between handmade pieces and mass-produced items. Like many people, I focused mostly on convenience. Today, I look at everything that is made very differently.
Being a full-time artist and handcrafting my own body of work has taught me just how much time, skill, and intention goes into truly handmade pieces. Making a single leather handbag or jewelry design takes hours of focused effort—from selecting materials to shaping, soldering, stitching, finishing, and refining every detail by hand.
Each piece tells a story. Each carries the mark of the person who made it.
Over the years, I have become deeply fascinated by the handmade process itself. That appreciation has shaped every part of my life. When you walk into my home, you’ll find beautifully made works by fellow artists—hand-turned wood cutting boards, silk scarves, intricate woodwork, knitted textiles, resin art, gemstone rings, glass pieces, sculptural hair pins, lamps, leather bags, one-of-a-kind pillows, photography, and more.
Why Handmade Is Better Than Mass-Produced
Handmade items are not designed to be rushed or replicated endlessly. They are created with intention, skill, and respect for materials. Here are some of the most important reasons why handmade truly matters:
-
Handmade pieces are unique and often one-of-a-kind.
No two handmade items are exactly alike—especially when they are made entirely by hand. -
Handmade is not produced at mass scale.
Limited production means greater attention to detail and higher standards at every stage. -
Handcrafted work is often more environmentally responsible.
Many artists use small-batch materials, reduce waste, and avoid large industrial processes. -
Buying handmade supports local and independent businesses.
Your purchase directly supports the maker, not a factory or corporate supply chain. -
Purchasing from artists helps sustain local jobs and creative communities.
Handmade businesses reinvest back into their communities through shows, studios, and collaborations. -
Handmade pieces reflect a higher level of craftsmanship.
Skilled hands, years of experience, and patience are required to create quality work. -
Handcrafted items demonstrate advanced skills.
From leather construction to metal smithing, these skills take years to master. -
Handmade items hold greater long-term value.
Because they are not mass-produced, handmade pieces often become treasured, lasting possessions.
The Difference You Can Feel
When someone picks up one of my handmade leather bags or jewelry designs, they immediately notice the difference—the weight, balance, materials, and finish. These pieces are designed to be worn, used, and enjoyed for years, not seasons.
I design and make MONOLISA handbags and jewelry one at a time, using Italian leather, high-quality metals, precision-cut stones, and time-tested techniques. That slower process allows for thoughtful design decisions and careful execution that simply don’t exist in mass production.
Supporting Artists Makes a Lasting Impact
As an artist, I truly enjoy supporting other makers and creative businesses. Several years ago, I started my Gift From Artists Shopping Directory to highlight and support fellow artists and small businesses. I’ve shared the pieces I personally purchased from these makers as a way to encourage thoughtful, intentional shopping.
When you choose handmade, you’re not just buying an object—you’re supporting creativity, craftsmanship, and human connection.
Have fun exploring, discovering, and supporting handmade. Every artist you support helps keep creativity alive.
